Sanctuary vs. Shelter — Why We Chose to Be a Sanctuary
People often ask us, "Why aren't you a rescue or a shelter?" It's a fair question — and one we love answering, because the difference is really the heart of who we are.
Shelters are wonderful. They move cats through quickly, finding loving homes for social, adoptable cats. That's their whole purpose, and the world needs them.
But some cats don't fit that model. These are the ones with chronic illness, disabilities, feral pasts, and behavioral needs. They may wait years for the right home, or never find one at all. Those are the cats we exist for.
A sanctuary means we don't have a clock ticking. A cat who comes to us has a home for life, whether that's six months or sixteen years. We're not measuring success by how fast we empty a kennel. We're measuring it by how good that cat's life is, for as long as they're with us.
That's why our intake is closed rather than open, and why we're smaller and slower than a shelter. We can only take in a cat once we know we can give them the space, care, and time they truly need for the rest of their lives. (We don't adopt out!)
We're proud to be a sanctuary. It means every cat here gets the one thing that matters most. We are someone who won't give up on them no matter how long it takes for them to heal.
A Quick Note on Our Legal Status
You might also wonder what it means when we say we're an "Illinois nonprofit corporation" and why we're not yet a "501(c)(3)." They sound similar, but they're two different things.
An Illinois nonprofit corporation is a legal structure. It's how we're organized as a business under state law. It means we exist to serve a mission, not to make a profit, and any money we bring in goes back into caring for our cats rather than to owners or shareholders (because we don't have any). We already have this status.
501(c)(3) is a federal tax status, granted by the IRS. It recognizes charitable organizations that don't pay federal income tax, and it's what makes donations tax-deductible for donors. We're currently raising funds to cover the filing fees and paperwork to get us there. (This won't affect our cat care budget — those funds stay separate.) Becoming a 501(c)(3) also opens the door to grants and partnerships only available to registered nonprofits, meaning more resources to care for and help even more cats. Therefore, any donations made to us are not yet tax-deductible. We'll let you know as soon as that changes! If you'd like to help us make that change, consider making a donation today.
