A Week in the Life of a Rescuer and Cat Influencer

A week in cat rescue: navigating Phantom's medical crisis and hospice care, growing our Instagram presence, launching Ko-fi fundraising, preparing for craft festivals, and taking steps toward 501c3 nonprofit status while managing chronic illness and the realities of rescue life.

This week has been a tapestry of hope, heartache, and small victories woven together in the way that only rescue life can create.

Phantom's Journey

A week ago yesterday, our hearts nearly broke when Phantom had to make an emergency trip to the vet. A male urinary tract blockage—every rescuer's nightmare scenario. The decision to place him on hospice care wasn't easy, but sometimes love means accepting what we cannot change while fighting for what we can.

The silver lining? Phantom is showing signs of improvement, though his newly overactive bladder means frequent accidents and a necessary stay in his crate. Watching him sink into depression from the confinement has been one of those gut-wrenching reminders that healing isn't just physical—it's emotional too. We're working through strategies to lift his spirits while keeping him safe and comfortable. Every small purr feels like a victory.

Building Our Digital Community

Between vet visits and crate cleanings, I've been busy sharing Phantom's story and so many others through fresh Instagram content. There's something powerful about the way a single photo can connect people to these cats' journeys. This week also marked an exciting milestone: launching our Ko-fi site and adding new printable bookmarks to our offerings.

The real excitement, though, is preparing for two major craft festivals coming up. We're creating framed cat-themed goodies that will help fund our rescue work while spreading awareness about the cats who need homes. Each piece we craft carries a story—Phantom's resilience, the playful energy of our foster kittens, the quiet dignity of our senior cats waiting for their forever families.

The Reality Behind the Posts

What doesn't always make it into the Instagram feed is the exhaustion. Managing chronic illness while caring for cats who depend on you completely is a delicate balance that sometimes feels impossible. The summer heat has kept us indoors more than usual, making the small space feel even smaller when you're juggling medical care, content creation, and basic household maintenance.

But we've planned a staycation through next Wednesday—a chance to reset, recharge, and maybe catch up on the house cleaning that's been sliding while we focus on more urgent needs.

Growing Into Something Bigger

The most exciting development this week has been the conversations about forming our board of directors. We're finally taking concrete steps toward writing our articles of incorporation for 501c3 status. It feels surreal to think that what started as a desire to help cats in need is evolving into something with the potential for real, lasting impact.

Until the paperwork is official, we continue doing what we've always done: creating content that educates and inspires, keeping our community updated on every rescue story, and proving that even the smallest actions can save lives.

The Thread That Connects It All

Looking back on this week, I'm struck by how every element connects. Phantom's medical crisis reminds our followers why rescue work matters:

  • The craft festival preparations turn our passion into sustainable funding.

  • The board discussions transform individual compassion into institutional change.

  • Even the staycation serves the mission—you can't pour from an empty cup, and burned-out rescuers help no one.

This is rescue life: messy, exhausting, heartbreaking, and absolutely essential. Every crate cleaning, every Instagram post, every sleepless night with a sick cat contributes to a larger story of hope. And as we work toward that 501c3 status, I'm reminded that we're not just saving cats—we're building something that will save cats long after we're gone.

Phantom may be on hospice care, but his story isn't over. Neither is ours.
